There aren’t too many problems with Big Surf Island. As you would expect, the graphics, sound and gameplay mechanics are virtually identical to the parent product. However, I was disappointed with one element of the package: the island license. Completed events on BSI add to a new island licence, not to your existing Paradise City licence, so you can forget about increasing your licence status by completing island events. Overall, it’s a small gripe, but for those chasing the elusive Burnout licence, one worthy of mention.
In terms of value, the DLC is sound. According to Criterion the package should take around five hours to complete. Many players will easily complete the main events well before that time but it will take significantly longer to smash the gates and billboards, complete the mega jumps and 100% the island. There are also 10 new trophies for the PS3 (seven bronze and three silver) and five new achievements for the Xbox 360 (Gamerscore 110) that should keep players busy for some time.
Overall, Big Surf Island adds another dimension to the Paradise City Experience. There are a few minor twists and tweaks, all of which improve on the original game, but buying this content expecting sweeping changes to the Burnout Paradise formula will result in disappointment. Big Surf Island is aimed at those players who want more aerial hijinks, more cars for the Burnout garage and more roads to tear limb from limb. If this is your idea of a good time, then Big Surf Island is ready and waiting for you.
Big Surf Island is available on the PSN for US$12.99 or Xbox Live for 1000 MS Points.
