ENTROPIA UNIVERSE EXPOSé (PART II)
The Real Cash Economy Explained.

Posted by Zac Simpson on Sep 13, 2009 06:46 (106 days ago)

[This feature is part two of That Gaming Site’s Exposé on the Entropia Universe. Part one is available here.]

The real world just isn’t real enough anymore. Gone is our attachment to the earth, when human beings had to subsist on what we could create, sell or find. Since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution we have hurtled into a new age: an age powered by rapidly accelerating technological discovery; an age where many of the tasks that kept us tied to the heartbeat of the natural world have become redundant. In the 21st century we no longer build our own homes, hunt, grow crops or travel for days on end to reach markets to sell our goods. In this century we commute to work, live in comfortable apartments and enjoy a measure of free time unequalled by any society recorded in the pages of history.

But on the Planet Calypso, a sci-fi mish-mash of futuristic living and wild-west colonialism, the pursuits of yesteryear exist in parallel with the technological promise of tomorrow. And to get there, all you have to do is plug in. 810,000 social butterflies have already made the journey, and many of those have found virtual fame and real life fortunes in the pixel world. So just what is it about the Entropia Universe that captivates so many people?

Epiphany Epibail Bailey (AKA James Burrows), a new arrival to the Planet Calypso, may have the answer.

“It was the Real Cash Economy (RCE) aspect that drew me in. The idea that everything in-game, skills and items, had a real world value suddenly gave me the feeling that the excitement I’d felt from achievements in other games I’d played was less real or tangible,” he said.

Burrows also believes that Entropia’s competitor MMORPGs cannot offer the depth of gaming experience found on the Planet Calypso.

“The EU (Entropia Universe)... is not really comparable to [other MMORPGs] that offer scripted storylines. EU leaves a lot more up to the individual and community imagination,” he said.

Epiphany Epibail Bailey.

Burrows is not alone in his interpretation that the RCE and community driven play embodied by the EU are fundamental cornerstones to its success. In fact, almost every loyal Entropian will tell you that the RCE was the bait that enticed them in, whilst the vibrant community that drives the economy (and many of the definitive advancements in the gameplay) kept them there.

The RCE works in an interesting and compelling way. For a deposit of US$10 players are credited with 100 PED minus a small transaction fee. Players can then use this cash to buy any item of monetary value. These items are as varied in condition, price and availability as any item in the real world, which has created a unique free-market exchange system upon which the economy of Entropia is built. This market is largely player driven – prices rise and fall with demand, sought after items sell at exorbitant costs, and even a haircut or new shoes may cost you dearly (depending on just how Pimp you want to be).

I've been playing this game for 3-4 years now I've really enjoyed it dispite some bugs and some overall problems this game is my favorite and really has the concept I've been looking for. I have yet to find a game like it (one that is cheaper ) great article!

Couple of errors.

Malls can only be built by MA / FPC and of the four only one has a land area associated with it.

The bank licenses have so far been a one off and many would argue as to how successful they've been. One has never opened or even claimed by the owner and one owner attempted to sell theirs off.

3 years in Entropia here, and in all that time I have never seen anyone take the time to go deeper than the surface and write a fair review. This one is very good, and shows some effort made at what is a short period of difficulty ingame due to the recent huge upgrade.
As with all cash based activities on or offline, there are some who go to extremes with and without a plan ...Deathdefier and Neverdie being good examples of calculated risks and planned extremes...many others come along and gamble, lose a lot eventually and then complain.
In 3 years my avatar is worth roughly 100 quid less than I have deposited into the game, that's not bad for the hours I spent ingame IMO. I've never been very lucky or played economically as others do...so I could likely have been ahead had I taken that path. HAd it been subs based that money would be gone.

Your path is your own, no quests here worth talking about, we make our own instead. It's a deep game that you will NEVER max out.

Thank you for the good read, fair report. Looking forward to part 3 as many of us Entropians are.

Another brilliantly written article on EU.
Great to see you cover more than the 'standard' aspects of EU.
I have no doubts that including EVERY aspect of EU would be near impossible, and am impressived with the depth of the articles so far.
If you feast on a challenge, then Entropia is most definately a platform that will constantly deliver them.
If you prefer to have you hand held, constant guidance through quests etc. and wish to progress quickly with minimal input, then Entropia is most likely not your cup of tea.
Definitely agree with those who stated 'Entropia is what you make of it'.
Looking forward to part 3

Entropia is like no other game - because it is a real cash economy.  Since I found Entropia I see no value in wasting hours of my life away "playing" any other "game".  Having a job that pays the bills is a great thing - even when the job is hard - but having a job that is fun, and pays the bills - Now that truly rocks!  Jon "Neverdie" Jacobs wrote the song Gamer Chick for his lady, but to loosly quote Kid Rock, " He ain't never met a Gamer Chick quite like Mine"!  I am Dajoka Jekyll Hyde, and my wife Mournin Basa Star both agree that no platform or MMORPG holds a candle to EU!  It is an elite game for serious gamers, so if that's not for you, check out Solitaire or the pinball game loaded on your pc ~ But don't waste your time ( cause time is money ;) playing any other just for fun.  That said try justifying or explaing to someone who does not understand, how you have 1000 bucks invested in the clothes you wear in an online game, and they will look at you just like a hillbilly looks when his wife gets him one of those Snuggy hooded blanket things you can buy on tv - WTF???

Cryingfreeman,
Whilst I  do not support this game one way or the other, there are some problems associated with the questions you raise concerning the article.  These include:

Criticizing the lack of bug reports, beta and story info (this article is about the RCE - not the greater game).

Criticizing the article for not including information that it does include.  For example, that ubers are on top of the food chain and are more likely to Global and that it is difficult to recoup 100% of your investment.

I also have certainly checked the forums - to ignore how the gaming world feels about this game would be an oversight, but as I mentioned this article is about the RCE not gamer's opinions.  As such I believe that it adequately conveys that this game could become a financial black hole if you keep depositing money to play without very careful consideration about how and where you spend it.  However, I do believe it is also possible to pay your way through sweating, but admittedly, extremely difficult and time consuming (of course that is currently a problem, and that too is mentioned in the article).

Your comment that some players are excluded from events is interesting and will be investigated before the next installment.

Thankyou for posting, regardless of the fact that I disagree on several points I do respect your right to voice your opinion.

Zac, Thanks again for taking your time with us and really getting an understanding of how things are for people who actually play! I think the comment from epiphany is really true and is one thing that is so great about EU: “The EU (Entropia Universe)... is not really comparable to [other MMORPGs] that offer scripted storylines. EU leaves a lot more up to the individual and community imagination,” he said. As you see, we have a very robust and passionate community of people who actually play, as opposed to those who maybe used to play and are now just whining (nod to cryingfreeman there, ;) Like Neverdie said, and like Deathifier found out, it's a lot like real life, in fact, it blurs into real life in a really exciting way!
I am looking forward to part III!

Nice article, looks nice, like Entropia Universe, it has nice graphics (if you have the pc to run those graphics), but it's not giving a true representation of what Entropia Universe is like.  You forget to mention it's full of bugs, it's still in beta (again) (after switching to  cryengine), lacking content (there's no real story, no quests, no interaction except for mindless grinding (for the nice items that never drop and the big loots that never come, except to some, surprisingly always the same happy few).  RCE is the key thing, the only thing ppl are really into this game is they are trying to get some of your $.  The ubers are the ones who have been on the top of the food chain for years (they got the best skills and gear since they were around when those things were still cheap, then they manipulated the prices up to insane amounts), all the other players (despite paying to play) don't even get access to the events (for ex. LandGrab where some lands where given out as prizes to the top50 or 10 societies, or the currently ongoing SGA event where the good items are suprise suprise falling in the hands of the ppl that already have the best items in the game).  So if you feel like loosing money, this is your game, it costs way more to play compared to other games (of course you can download for free, but you can't shoot or mine or craft anything unless you pay, dearly).  Just check out some of the community forums if you want to see how bad it is, they are filled with extremes (ppl complaining about all the stuff that isn't working or about how much money they lost in EU, and then you have the ppl who are saying only good things about EU (because they got money 'invested' in the game and simply want to attract more ppl to leach off).
