When Modern Warfare 2 was announced at GDC 2009, many were surprised at the absence of the 'Call of Duty' prefix. Series' creator Infinity Ward defended the change, stating that Modern Warfare had 'taken on a life of its own' and deserved to be a stand alone franchise. So, after months of faithful fans conditioning themselves to refer to the title sans 'Call of Duty', we learn it is now Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 once again.
In a post on his Twitter account, Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling showed the first picture of the game's box art. What did eager fans see above the now familiar Modern Warfare 2 logo? Call of Duty. In response to the addition, Activision released a statement, saying:
"Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 is the direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. We have focused our attention on Modern Warfare in order to most effectively communicate the fact that this is the first true sequel in the Call of Duty series. Infinity Ward, the original creators of the Call of Duty franchise, has said from the beginning Modern Warfare 2 resides in the Call of Duty universe. This is reflected in the title's package."
Prior to this announcement there had been rumors that Activision was uneasy regarding brand recognition. This came as a result of several surveys that showed a substantial amount of unawareness of the change on the part of consumers. Robert Bowling's Twitter can be read @ www.twitter.com/fourzerotwo
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is scheduled for release on November 10, 2009.
