Nintendo has revealed that for the first time in the series history, the upcoming DS release, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks will feature the long famed Princess Zelda working alongside Link as his team mate.
Breaking a 23 year tradition, Princess Zelda will actually join Link in his quest to save Hyrule. From what we understand, players will be able to use Zelda’s spirit to control big hulking suits of armour known as Phantoms to battle enemies, assist Link in puzzle solving and help uncover new secrets. Zelda will also ride along side Link on his customisable train to guide players who are having difficulty reaching new areas.
Princess Zelda has traditionally been featured in the series as the damsel in distress who is the cause for the young hero’s rescue adventure. According to Nintendo:
“This offense has been repeated more than a dozen times since, leaving her largely out of sight while Link traversed dark dungeons and confronted monstrous enemies alone in order to save her.”
Link and Zelda have teamed up in the series before but never for more than a couple of scenes toward the end of the games. This time it appears that the princess will play a more prominent role.
The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks launches on Nintendo DS in December 7 in North America and December 11 in Europe.
